We will learn how to cut hair. We won't be memorizing a haircut and we won't be memorizing a bunch of theory terms and definitions either. My goal is for you to actually understand the fundamentals of haircutting. With that, you'll be able to design and create a haircut that will suit your client's face shape, head shape, hair type, and life style.

The class will start out with Theory. We will use lots of visual aids to help you understand the "How's" and "Why's" of haircutting.

How and why does elevating hair low build weight? When and why do we section vertically or horizontally? We'll find the answers and learn together using many visual aids. This way, you'll own the information instead of just taking my word for it.

I'll also give you a free workbook to help make note taking be easier, more understandable and more organized for you.

I'll be cutting side-by-side with you during the hands-on portion. I'll be explaining the "How's" and "Why's" behind each step, showing you how I apply theory.

Apply theory yourself! :) After I finish and explain a portion of the haircut, you will do the same on your mannequin. Hearing and seeing theory in action helps, but I think that applying theory yourself will help you even more.

I'll be going around to assist you, give you tips and answer questions.

This past weekend, our salon community had the incredible opportunity to sit under the teaching of Shannel Mariano. Shannel showed up with passion and kindness, and both flowed through every ounce of her teaching. Her honesty made us all feel at home, and her transparency bonded us as a community as we related to her anecdotes and funny stories.

There were multiple aha!, moments of “that makes so much sense!”, as well as sheepish grins as we nodded in “yeah, I’ve made that mistake, too”.

The visual aids used, the breakdown of each step and method, and the handouts with explanations coincided perfectly with the words spoken. It was so easy to make connections and follow along as she taught.

To those who cutting seemed overwhelming and scary, they gained excitement and courage. To those who had grown to see cutting as dull and boring, they gained a renewed passion and focus.

We had stylists in the class ranging from a few months of experience to 20 years, and each artist walked away feeling empowered and capable.

Our group was handed relevant tools to continue growing into talented artists creating beautiful work. To say that we were refreshed, encouraged, and challenged would all be such understatements! Shannel has the natural gift of turning weaknesses into true opportunities for growth, and we SO enjoyed hosting her!
